USAFP runs lean and green

March 15, 2012 - The Chicago River isn't the only thing that's green this St. Patrick's Day. With its lean initiatives and eco-friendly mentality, United States Alliance Fire Protection (USAFP) is an environmental leader in the fire safety industry.

The company has taken steps to reduce waste and run a tighter ship in recent years. In-house, USAFP recycles everything from cardboard to plastic, and even collects recycled pipe and other material from job sites. Every year, USAFP adds at least one new internal green initiative.
USAFP also has two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified professionals on-site to provide environmentally friendly construction tips.

"When I work on LEED projects, clients know that I am knowledgeable about the green construction process," says Matt Johnsen, PE, a design engineer with USAFP. "It's a big benefit."

USAFP kicked off a lean initiative program several years ago, eliminating waste by tracking orders more closely to stave off excess purchases.

In another lean initiative, USAFP recently reevaluated its entire mobile fleet. This process included general cleaning, elimination of unused material and an organized restocking of required materials.

"It made our entire fleet safer and more energy-efficient while reducing construction waste," Johnsen says.

Johnsen adds that installing and maintaining fire sprinklers that extinguish fires quickly remains the company's core green initiative.

"With minimal water output, our sprinkler systems prevent fire damage from running rampant," he says. "Early extermination also reduces the output of toxins into the environment."
